Funny to say I’ve been on vacation this past week, but have nothing to post on the blog today. I do have an idea for tomorrow, and I need to work on it. I’m actually on deadline, and I’ve read eight books in the last week. But, I reviewed one here, and you’ll see the other reviews in November and December.
So for today, I’ll save you time, let you know I read for the entire vacation, and I’ll have a piece for you tomorrow. In the meantime, check out The Poisoned Pen Bookstore’s blog because I’m the blogger there. https://poisonedpen.com/category/fiction-review/ Look for the “Distractions” posts where a number of authors have made book suggestions throughout the pandemic. That’s been fun.
Morning Lesa
No shame in missing a post once in a while! I’m so far behind with reviewing that’s it’s becoming embarrassing, and unlike you I don’t have a full time job to manage either. But we need to be kind to ourselves – always, but especially now.
I’m reading a not-that-good British Library Crime Classic ‘The Hog’s Back
Mystery’ by Freeman Wills Crofts. These editions have such beautiful covers but I’m afraid the contents often seem a bit mediocre, and I
do sometimes wonder why the ‘Golden Age of Crime’ has that accolade. Maybe I’m just not the right reader for the style of the time – very big focus on intricate details of times and locations, but very little character development. I think I like more about the people and their lives.
I hope you’re having a good day,
Best wishes
Rosemary
Rosemary, I think it is fair to say that "plodding" is an accurate description for Crofts's writing. I haven't read this one but I did read a few of his early books (including a couple pre-French) and, while I found them readable, they were no Agatha Christies.
Thanks Jeff, very interesting to hear your thoughts. Many of the bloggers I know over here are extremely enthusiastic about the whole BL Crime Classics project, but I’ve now read 3 or 4 by different authors & none was memorable. As you say, plodding, especially when compared to Christie – it does make me wonder if all these others went out of print for a reason!
I think you're both right. They may have gone out of print for a reason. And, like you, Rosemary, I read for character.
Back to work today with a full schedule! Thanks for your patience.
Enjoy the vacation!
I have a review to write and am not motivated to do much of anything. It was a good book. I just need to get it in gear and write the review.
Current read is FAIR WARNING by Michael Connelly in hardback LARGE PRINT via the library. This morning brings news that THE LANTERN MEN by Elly Griffiths is in transit for me as are a couple of other things.
I'll be very interested in your comments about Fair Warning, Kevin.
