When I’m really busy, I can catch up with Heather Graham’s Krewe of Hunters with her short holiday novellas. Her latest one, A Turkey of a Day, features two of my favorite characters in the series, Angela Hawkins Crow and her husband, Jackson. He’s the supervisor for the entire team, and she’s the tech director. But, for Thanksgiving, they’re two parents lucky enough to have the day with their two children.
Or, that’s what is supposed to happen. While their daughter, Victoria, is in her room, they can’t find their son, Corby, a high school student, but Jackson does find a turkey tied by a leash in a tree. Corby is trying to keep it a secret that his friend Jimmy Rodgers wants to keep the turkey as a pet. He’s still mourning the tragic death of a cousin, and Jimmy views the turkey as a pet. But, Jimmy’s not there. Instead, the spirit of Jimmy’s dead grandfather shows to the Crows, and reveals the entire Rodgers family is in trouble, trapped in their house by dangerous men.
Let’s face it. A twenty-three page novella doesn’t allow for much plot development, let alone character development. But, Angela and Jackson step up to take care of law enforcement. Readers of the series will have no doubt the Krewe members and the grandfather’s ghost will combine to bring about a satisfactory ending. It’s not much of a story, but it satisfies the need for a Krewe of Hunters story along with a holiday one.
