If you’ve never seen her, that’s author Heather Graham on the cover of her Krewe of Hunters novella, Dark and Deadly Be the Whispers. Like other recent novellas, this one takes place on a holiday weekend, Labor Day. Graham sends Jackson Crow and his wife and computer expert, Angela Hawkins, back to New Orleans.
The New Orleans police have arrested a man as a killer. He claims to be a “Rougarou” the Cajun-French version of werewolves. But he says he was changed by a group of witches. As part of the Krewe of Hunters, Jackson and Angela are staying in the city to look for that group. They’re guessing the witches have changed their tactics. A woman’s body indicates they might now be turning to vampires.
With the help of a ghost, a man who fought during the Battle of New Orleans, Jackson and Angela search for a group that meets in a historic cemetery.
I liked this novella more than the others in the Krewe of Hunters series. Graham quickly highlights the sites of New Orleans from Pirate’s Alley, Jackson Square, to Cafe du Monde. It’s obvious she loves ghost stories and New Orleans in this fun, short entry in the series.
