This week, I’m giving away two mysteries featuring clergy who turn sleuth. Let’s start with G.M. Malliet’s Devil’s Breath. Max Tudor is spending a little bit more time now as a sleuth. His former life as an MI5 agent has caught up with him. When the body of a glamours film star washes ashore, a former colleague asks for Max’s help. It’s a perfect “closed circle” murder. The victim could only have been killed by someone on a film director’s yacht. Max uncovers all kinds of motives, but only one killer.
Fans of the Grantchester Mysteries on PBS may want the final book, Sidney Chambers and the Persistence of Love by James Runcie. Unlike Max Tudor, Sidney Chambers is turning more to the religious side. The British countryside may appear tranquil, but there are plenty of cases to keep Sidney and his old friend, Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, as busy as ever. One story in the collection features a world of hippies, folk singers, and psychedelic plants. One features a historic religious text that disappears. And, there’s a story of art-world corruption. And, Sidney’s nephew disappears. Set in 1971, the stories are ones of crime and life.
