If ever there was an image of my summer days as a kid, that’s it. Yes, I spent lots of time outside with my sisters, but I also spent entire days on my bed reading enormous books. I read three Wizard of Oz books in one day. I had such a headache at the end of the day, but I wasn’t going to quit on that final one. Once, I even went out early in the morning and sat on the concrete in our garage to read because it had just been poured the day before, and it was cool.
Anyways, I don’t have a review today. You know those slogans “Gone Fishing”? I’ve Gone Reading.
I hope you go reading today. It’s a nice day for it.
Enjoy your reading day Lesa. I haven’t touched a book so far this weekend. My brother stayed with my mom yesterday so my boyfriend and I could have a vacation day. We had lunch at our favorite roadside burger joint, drove to PA to see some sand sculptures, saw La Cage aux Folles and had a nice dinner out. Now back to reality.
Thank you, Sandy! I’m glad you had a vacation day. We all need some time away from daily routine, just time to be us.
I spent my childhood reading, too. I packed Wind in the Willows, Stuart Little, and the Oz books in my bike basket and rode out to the desert wash behind the house. If I followed the wash I could find magical shady hideaways under the mesquite. If I had a PB &J I would stay until almost dark in the summer before heading home.
Great memories, aren’t they, Melanie? It says a lot that we can remember which books were part of our reading days. Those memories are special.
I am planning on it! I am zipping through e-mails today. My Metropolis book is very intriguing right now!
Good for you, Carolee!
Have a fabulous reading day.
Thank you, Jeannette!
The summers were wonderful with lots of reading. I have fond memories of riding my bicycle to the library to return books and check out more books. One summer, I kept a record of the books I’ve read. I wished I had that list. Great memories.
Good summers of reading. Nothing better, Bonnie.
I love that. When we moved to Brooklyn when I was 9, I discovered that our landlord;s family had the complete set of (hardcover) Oz books in the basement and I read through them one after the other.
Our libraries used to have summer borrowing where you could take out books in June that were yours until September (probably obviously, you couldn’t borrow new books), so if you went away for the summer (or several weeks) you could take them with you. I remember discovering and reading one of my all-time favorite books that way: THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, which inspired my hatred of injustice.
That said, I doubt I’ll get much reading done this week. My cousin made herself a 55th Anniversary Party yesterday, so we were in teh city for that and stayed over in a hotel (and I forgot my Kindle at home!). We have concerts Tuesday (at Jones Beach) and Wednesday (the Beacon, 74th & Broadway) this week, and will be staying in hotels both nights. A mini-vacation of sorts like that is better than getting on an airplane.
And, honestly, Jeff? With all the airplane problems right now, you are better off with a mini-vacation. But, you left your Kindle at home! That’s a tragedy.
What a wonderful summer plan that library offered for readers! And, you understand the appeal of all of those Oz books. Those were good summers.
