Happy Saturday! I love Saturdays, home with Josh and all kinds of books. This Saturday, though, I have to finish packing up books from a bookcase, and empty out a highboy. I think I have someone who will take both of them. I need to be ready. That’s good because it pushes me to continue to pack.
What about you? You can either just read this post, or tell me what your plans are for the weekend.
I’m going to go see Chicago in concert!
Oh, have fun, Glen!
Hi Lesa
At least books are easy to pack.
Having finally been to my last festival show for this year, I have three reviews left to write and they will take up most of today. Last night Anna and I went to see the Barbie Movie – it was quite strange, and really quite wonderful, not to feel I had to take notes!
I enjoyed most of the film very much, Ryan Gosling was so funny and I loved Weird Barbie. I felt the ending was too long and too Hallmark for me, but I’m just an old cynic. All this stuff about ‘you can be whatever you want to be’ may be true in Barbieland, but in the UK at least it’s nonsense, and I feel it gives young people false hope. I don’t mean they should be negative and have no ambitions, of course I don’t, but I do feel they should be shown realistic possibilities and not some rose-tinted Barbie nonsense masquerading as the real world.
But I’m very glad we went (It’s so long since I’ve been in a commercial cinema – or any cinema for that matter, as the largest independent cinema in Edinburgh and its sister operation in Aberdeen went into administration some time ago – that I didn’t even know they had these huge reclining seats. Though I do think having armrest tables just encourages people to buy buckets of rubbish food and gorge their way through Doritos etc while really just sitting there doing nothing. What is it with this need to eat and drink at every event?
So that was my excitement for the end of my festival (though the Fringe and Book Festivals don’t officially end till Monday.)
Tomorrow I am heading back up the road to Deeside and I have everything crossed for a peaceful week of seeing friends, walking, reading whatever I want to read and generally being lazy. I wonder if that will work out?
Good luck with your remaining packing – not long now!
You’re right, Rosemary. Decisions as to which books to keep, but they are easy to pack.
Oh, it has been a while since you’ve been to the movies. My friend, Donna, and I go to lunch before the movie, so we don’t feel the need to snack all the way through. I haven’t seen Barbie, although I read a lot about it.
I have the feeling you’re looking forward to going home and getting back in your routine. Enjoy it! Hugs!
It’s laundry day at my house.
Good morning! I’m preparing to go to Bouchercon and doing a bit every day–deciding what panels and events to see (and when I can eat!), planning what I’ll wear, making myself reminders of when to sign in on Southwest, and so on. I like to do it in stages because I’m not a last-minute person.
Sounds like you are very organized as well, Lesa. Pace yourself and give yourself time to wind down and get some relaxation. It’s hard, I know. But keep your eyes on the prize–you know it will all be worthwhile in the end.
You’re right, Margie. I’ll get there. Just takes some preparation and time. But, it will work out for both of us. Enjoy Bouchercon! And, you do have to find time to eat.
Going to my great nephew’s wedding this afternoon.
Should be good weather for it, not hot and humid.
Enjoy the family visit, Mom. Love you!
I guess it really is getting close.
This weekend will be the usual, food and reading and streaming. Saturday night is Brit Night here, and as we finally finished all the David Suchet Poirots last week, we have to decide what to watch next, probably Jonathan Creek. But first we will watch the last two parts of the Aberdeen-set Gramite Harbour, and the next episode of Foyle’s War.
Our Jackson Browne concert was postponed from Wednesday,s o now we’ll be going to the city to see it on Monday night.
Jeff, I saw you’d mentioned Granite City on Thursday and meant to respond but ran out of time as usual.
The series has had a lot of criticism here, but I can’t really comment as I only managed to watch half of one episode before the BBC took it off i-Player. Very frustrating as you can now only see it on pay-to-view, and I feel we pay quite enough for all the other streaming services already. But as a second series is on its way, I expect they may well show the first again in the run up.
If it isn’t very good, it’s a shame. Aberdeen could do with a top TV series – Rebus has done a lot for Edinburgh, Vera for the North East of England and PD James’s Dalgleish for East Anglia.
In the meantime Anna and I started watching Steeltown Murders, which I have already seen but she hasn’t – and to be honest I can’t remember the ending anyway! But I’m enjoying it so far, very reminiscent of the time, and of the way the police operated then (even outside London.) And I do love Steffan Rodhri, Philip Gelnister and Siôn Alun Davies.
I think I’m going to have to subscribe to Disney though, just to see the second series of The Bear – such great television.
One of our booked concerts (Go Go Penguin) has just been postponed from September to February with no reason given. It doesn’t really make much difference to us, but it would be nice to know why these things happen. I hope you enjoy Jackson Browne.
Rosemary
Actually, we enjoyed the looks at Aberdeen in GRANITE HARBOUR and thought the first of three episodes was fairly good. Let’s say we’ve seen a lot worse over the years, and I always love a Scottish accent, even if it isn’t authentically local. I mean, how many times do we see shows set in Manchester where someone is talking with a Cockney accent? More than one. At least Dawn Steele and Gary Lewis and Fiona Bell are really from Scotland.
Sounds like a good weekend, Jeff. Enjoy it. And, enjoy the concert on Monday! Hope to hear about it on Thursday.
Thank goodness, books are easy to pack. Lately, I’ve been pulling out books from my various bookcases to donate so that I can make room for more books. LOL It’s the kitchen stuff I don’t like to pack. I’m empathetic with your packing. I really find it stressful to move. At least, this will be your last move, and then you can enjoy your retirement. Today, we’ll be watching our grandson at his swim lesson this afternoon. The rest of the day will be for relaxing and lots of reading.
Just watched GRANITE HARBOR the last couple of days and every much enjoyed it. Saw a lot of criticism of it in recent months over on the DorothyL list and glad I ignored the negative advice.
As to the weekend–football, dishes as my dishwasher died yesterday, and hoping the power grid holds and the power stays on. 110 yesterday and we might hit that again today. Blah.
Thinking of you!! ❤
Working today at the library. Church and reading on Sunday.
