When you’re looking for a fun, dog-loving romantic novel, Beth Kendrick’s Black Dog Bay books work. They’re all loosely connected by the setting, Black Dog Bay, Delaware, “the best place in America to bounce back after your break up”, but you don’t have to have read any of the previous books to enjoy In Dog We Trust.

Jocelyn Hillier has a job. She and her mother own a laundry business that rents linens, clean towels and sheets, to the summer residents of Black Dog Bay. When she saves a dog in danger of being hit by a car, though, she acquires a new job and a wealthy boyfriend. The boyfriend was driving the car. Jocelyn’s new employer is Mr. Allardyce, owner of three pedigreed Labrador retrievers who need a dog walker. Neither situation turns out as Jocelyn expects. Mr. Allardyce dies, leaving his estate to the dogs, and leaving Jocelyn as guardian of the three dogs.

Jocelyn is stunned by the news of the dogs’ inheritance and her obligations. Mr. Allardyce’s son, Liam, isn’t happy, though. He’s determined to get what he believes is rightfully his. However, Jocelyn never heard Mr. Allardyce talk about a son, and she isn’t willing to let the dogs lose their inheritance.

Will money change a working class young woman? Kendrick’s latest romantic comedy combines issues of class and status, money and working class, dogs and family. It’s another charming book in the Black Dog Bay series. Anyone who enjoys a few dogs mixed in with romance should appreciate the latest in this delightful series.
