Between my review deadline and Sunday’s Tony Awards, I haven’t had time to finish another book. I did go back and pick up an older title from one of the authors in the anthology Heroic Hearts. So, I should have a review of an urban fantasy on Wednesday.

In the meantime, Sandie Herron is leading up to the July release of Linda Castillo’s new Kate Burkholder novel, The Hidden One. Today, she has a review of a Kate Burkholder short story, “Long Lost”. Thank you, Sandie.

Chief of Police in Painters Mill, Ohio Kate Burkholder is finally taking a couple days off following some very tough police work.  She is joined by her friend and lover John Tomasetti, an agent for the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.  They’ve chosen a bed and breakfast inn an hour outside town to escape to and unwind.

Kate and John’s reputations precede them, so the Mennonite couple running the inn quickly tells them about a disappearance from the inn over twenty years before.  Not really wanting to get involved, the two are intrigued enough to check with the local law enforcement to get details.  A trip to see the main suspect has them wondering about his involvement, so just how did this Amish girl disappear, or was it something more sinister?

John and Kate stumble onto a solution to this mystery, but debate whether they should share it.  I won’t reveal the answer to this lighter weight novella.  It was nice to see the pair take things a little easier and not have a bloody mess to solve.  The characteristic style of Linda Castillo was still quite evident in this short tale meant to follow book 4 in the series, Gone Missing.
