We all know Heather Graham’s Krewe of Hunters books are my book addiction. I read every new book as if I was scarfing down a box of chocolates. Sound of Darkness is no exception. It kicks off a new trilogy within the series, and that’s one thing I enjoy about the books. While they’re all about the Krewe of Hunters, a unique FBI unit, the trilogies within usually feature a small cast of characters.

Colleen Law knew she wanted to go into law enforcement after she saved a woman’s life when she was young. Colleen’s unusual psychic gift was the ability to “hear” other people, usually victims of a crime. In this case, she heard a woman calling for help, and tracked it down to a nearby car. Despite her father’s objections, she was certain enough to break into the car where they found a woman, bound and gagged. While Colleen thanked her father for saving the woman’s life, he insisted she had actually done that.

Ten years later, there’s a serial killer in the Virginia area. When Krewe of Hunters agents Mark Gallagher and Ragnar Johansen, along with Mark’s amazing dog, Red, arrest a man who kept a woman in his basement, they hope they’ve caught the killer the media labeled “The Embracer”. Someone has been kidnapping young women, torturing them, and burying them in the woods. Then, they send message about love and embraces. But, before the team can even celebrate the capture, Mark is sent to another case, teamed up with a rookie agent, Colleen Law. While Mark’s team was searching for and rescuing one woman, another one disappeared.

Mark is unhappy to be teamed up with a rookie, and Colleen knows he’s disgruntled. She even calls him on it, and that’s probably the best thing that could happen for their working relationship. Then, Colleen hears their latest kidnap victim, and she and Red track her down to a casket in the woods.

While the Krewe of Hunters hope they’ve caught “The Embracer”, the two kidnap victims recover in the same hospital. And, the agents’ suspicions about the men around those victims continues to grow. Then when the primary suspect is questioned, he taunts the FBI. He seems to have his eye on Mark’s new partner, though, Colleen.

As in all of the Krewe of Hunters books, there’s crime, ghosts, and a fast-moving romance. The romance is always the obvious part. From the moment Mark and Colleen meet, anyone who reads the series knows where it’s going. But, the ghosts are always new, often with a historical connection. Graham always includes historical elements in these books. And, the crimes vary book to book.

As I mentioned though, most of the books in this series are part of trilogies. Sound of Darkness introduces Colleen Law, but the moment I learned that Colleen is a triplet, and they each have a gift, I knew where the other two books would go. Aura of the Night is due out in July, and it features Megan Law. The third book, Voice of Fear, comes out in October. That book will round out the stories of the Law triplets with a book about Patrick. I’m ready for more chocolates.
