It’s Wednesday. That means it’s a good day to ask you what you’re reading. You already know I’m a nerd. I’m reading a book called Reviews Are In: Read, Write, and Expand Your Career by Henrietta Verma. It’s addressed to librarians, and says why librarians should review books.
First, we need to read the books. So, while I’m reading that one, would you share what you’re reading this week? I’m enjoying the conversations that sometimes happen while we read the comments. Thank you!
OK, finally got a novel going that I really like, and it is a time travel thing. It's Robert Charles Wilson's LAST YEAR. (But an aside, doesn't it annoy you when the person who writes the dust jacket copy gets the simplest facts of the matter wrong? On the FIRST PAGE of the book it is clearly stated that it is Illinois, get the jacket says it takes place in Ohio. Minor, but annoying.) It's a library book.
Also reading (of course) a couple of short story collections, John Scalzi's just released MINATURES: THE VERY SHORT FICTION OF JOHN SCALZI, where I bought the ebook; and Ray Garton's METHODS OF MADNESS, which was a free Open Road Media download a couple of weeks ago (and is a nasty little book).
As we only have 11 days before we hit the road for Florida I've had to return a bunch of library books I won't get around to in time (though I still have a couple). I hope to find more ebooks to borrow while we're gone…to go alone with the 400+ of my books I have on the Kindle.
It may have been the after Christmas blahs, but I was having a hard time finding my next book. GIL'S ALL FRIGHT DINER by A. Lee Martinez fixed that. I loved it! Now I'm reading FLAMING LONDON by Joe Lansdale.
Interesting that you both had problems finding books to read after the holidays. A librarian friend of mine said the same thing.
And, yes, Jeff, that does drive me nuts. I read a dust jacket recently that had me confused because the character's name was wrong on it. At first, I thought there was a problem with the book. No, of course not. The person writing the dust jacket had it wrong, or, they had read it pre-pub, and then the name was changed. Yes, it drives me nuts.
Just started Carleton Carpenter's DEADHEAD.
Just finished Silent Scream by Angela Marsons. I liked it enough to buy her second book Evil Games both books are ebooks. The library has her books, just didn't won't to wait for the library to open after the holidays. I got the first one for .99 had to pay 3.99 for the second one. I really have a issue with paying that much for a ebook, just gave in so I could read the follow up book. Might get the rest from the library. It is not like I have no books in my home to read. Some times it doesn't make sense. Having books everywhere and keep on buying books or checking out more books from the library because you hear about a new book or author. I keep telling myself, no more till you read some that you have already. I fail every time. No hope for me.😀📚📚
Last Friday I learned about the author M C Beaton and her books. I was looking over the TV guide for Thursday night. Found that GPB – PBS has a show called The Quiche of Death by MC Beaton. I am going to tape it and watch it later. Just passing this information on in case someone has read her books and might like to see this show. Since I haven't read any of her books I thought it would be a good start to watch the show and groom there.
I loved Gil's All Fright Diner, I've read it a couple of times. I'm also having trouble getting into a book. I've tried several and never seem to get past the first fifty or so pages. Once I put them down I just don't have any desire to pick them up again.
I took advantage of a 3-day trip to Southern California to celebrate the holidays with our son, daughter and 2-month-old grandson to read two recent books on my Kindle–Murder in Containment by Anne Cleeland and Get Me to the Grave on Time by D.E. Ireland, both winners. Next up: The Reek of Red Herrings by Catriona McPherson and An Unsettling Crime for Samuel Craddock by Terry Shames (hope to buy it at B&N this week).
I'm reading A Long Time Dead by Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins. It's a collection of short stories featuring Mike Hammer.
I'm reading Umberto Eco's Prague Cemetery and Robert Gottlieb's Avid Reader
I wish I could help those of you who just can't find anything, but I really think only time will do. And, for the rest of you, thank you for sharing! And, Charlotte? I'm right there with you. I can't stop either. My mother gave me a tee shirt for Christmas. It says, "It's not hoarding if it's books."
Travel day yesterday so I was without internet. I just finished reading MANITOU CANYON by William Kent Krueger. I always enjoy the Cork O'Connor books, and it was nice to see the storyline shift from the Boundary Waters area to a remote First Nations lake in Ontario.
These are the books I have checked out of the library:

My opthamalogist wants me to give my eyes a break so I am listening to an audio for half the time and reading for the rest. It is working, my eyes are feeling better.
I am listening to The Room by Emma Donoghue. I have been putting it off because I thought I would be to scared to finish it! But it is very intriguing so far. Also, reading, The Underworld by Kevin Canty which was inspired by a very bad fire in a mine in Idaho. I love his writing, it is very hard to put this book down! Want to read all the others that he has written,
I'm almost finished with Lone WOlf by Sara Driscoll. It's an excellent mystery/thriller featuring FBI K-9 search and rescue dogs and their handlers. The characters (and the dogs) in this new series debut are very well done.
I am reading a time travel novel " A Second chance" by Jodi Taylor. It is part of the Chronicles of St. Mary's series.
