I’m just back from a long weekend, and before that a trip to Arizona. You would think I’d have plenty of time to read, right? Actually, I seldom read much when I’m traveling with other people. And, that’s what’s happening right now. I couldn’t finish my book last night, and I won’t be around this evening to read, so Wednesday’s blog will be sadly lacking. I’ll have plenty of time to finish my book on Wednesday, though, for the Thursday posting.
So, that leaves two days, today and tomorrow. You have a couple choices. You can share what you’re reading with me, and with each other. You can go back and look over the April releases, and let us know what you want to read. Or, you can just choose to stop back on Thursday. I hope you come back Thursday, no matter what choice you make.
I’m one third of the way through Laura Bradford’s new Amish mystery, A Churn for the Worse. I have Glen Erik Hamilton’s new book, Hard Cold Winter, waiting. So, I have some good books. Tell us what you’re reading right now, please.
And, because one of the blog readers, Virginia, made the kindest remark I heard at Left Coast Crime, I have a message for her.
Good morning, Virginia. Enjoy the coffee! I now think of you having coffee in the morning while reading Lesa’s Book Critiques. Thank you.
I just finished The Tsarist's Legacy by Jennifer Laam. I am working my way through The Time Traveler's Wife and The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend.
Lesa, I agree with you. Whatever my intentions are, I find it hard to get much reading done on a road trip. A convention is particularly tough, especially if I am spending most of my time with friends. hat's wh short stories seem to fit the bill on short trips.
Currently I am reading the third in Tanya Huff's military space opera series about tough Marine Sgt. Torin Kerr (she was recently promoted to Gunnery Sgt.), THE HEART OF VALOR. I read the latest Insp. Salvo Montalbano book by Andrea Camilleri before that, A BEAM OF LIGHT. I didn't think it was one of his best, frankly, though as readable as ever.
I'm reading what would have been a perfect collection of stories for your trip – DISCUNT NOIR, ed. by Patricia Abbott & Steve Weddle. They are no more than 800 words long, all set around a Megamart store, with such authors as Bill Crider and Ed Gorman among the writers.
I just finished 15th Affair by James Patterson and am just starting One More Day by Kelly Simmons.
Just started reading THE BOOKMAN'S WAKE by Charlie Lovett.
I just finished Black Rabbit Hall by Eva Chase (excellent new author) and started Anne Cleeland's Murder in Thrall–thanks for letting me know about this author, Lesa.
A Churn for the Worse is so good. You'll love it!
I'm finishing up a reread of a Trixie Belden book today (The Mystery of the Missing Millionaire) and will start The Big Chili by Julie Buckley.
I'm just starting The Virginian by Owen Wister. It's been a long time since I've read it. My local library still has their original copy from 1963.
Page! Two big novels at a time. I usually mix my reading up when I'm reading multiple titles – a mystery, fiction, nonfiction. I admire what you're doing.
Jeff, I love to read your notes about what you're reading since you include your opinion. Discount Noir does sound like just what I should have been reading. Yes, conventions are tough. Even when I have good intentions, I end up spending time with people, and that's more important.
Lori and Bill, Thank you. I always enjoy seeing what you're reading.
Margie, You'll have to let me know what you think, Margie. Not a typical mystery at all.
Thanks, Mark! We talked about you at LCC when they asked why there were no men on the reviewers panel. They asked, don't men review books. And, we mentioned you and Kristopher Zgorski, and some others, but I started with you.
Oh, Sandy. I hope that library book is still in good shape.
Just started Margaret Coel's The Man Who Fell from the Sky: 20 pages in and I'm hooked.
~Tricia
I'm reading Deep Shadow, an entry in the Doc Ford series by Randy Wayne White.
I am reading Chaos Theory, a debut book by M. Evonne Dobson, which I won at the Debut Authors breakfast at LCC. It's published by The Poisoned Pencil (don't you love that name for their YA arm?). Good so far and I'm so excited about reading books by authors that I met at LCC, especially the ones who are just starting out and not so well known. Glad to do my part to spread the word. Right?
P.S. I'm ready to go again to a conference. 🙂
Thanks, Lesa. I'm honored to be there in mention if not in person.
I just finished Death of a Nurse by M.C. Beaton and now am reading The Vanishing Thief by Kate Parker.
I'm reading The Outsmarting of Criminals and finding it delightful. First of his books I've read, but I'll have to try more.
Because I'm focused on introducing new dog to Katie Cat, I'm still reading The Killing Trail by Margaret Mizushima. It's an excellent Timber Creek, Colorado, mystery starring a female deputy and her K-9 partner. I'm squeezing in reading time whenever the furry critters allow so hope to finish this week.
I have just started The Changing Season by Steven Manchester. I am doing a review for the author. Seems like each book he writes gets better and better. This one is a coming of age book and the boy has a close relationship with his elderly dog. It really gets into some serious topics.
Thanks for keeping the conversation going, everyone! I just finished A Churn for the Worse so I'll have a review tomorrow. But, I don't think we've talked about what you've been reading for a while, so this was nice.Thank you!
I'm reading Silence of the Lamps by Karen Rose Smith. It's really good so far.
In print I am reading A KNIFE IN THE BACK by Bill Crider for a future FFB review.
My current e-book is THE COMBAT ZONE by Jed Power.
Interesting title, Laurie.
Kevin, Good to see your titles. Hugs, my friend.
