I didn’t have much time to read last night. I had to bake a bundt cake for an extortion breakfast at a radio station where we’re promoting our One Book/One Community program. This year, Piper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black, is our guest speaker.
So, I’ve barely started Quicksand by Carolyn Baugh. The mystery features Officer Nora Khalil, an Egyptian-American officer with the Philadelphia police force. She’s part of the FBI’s Safe Streets Violent Gang Task Force. She struggles with her job while trying to remain true to her faith and her traditional family’s expectations. But, the discovery of the mutilated body of a young Muslim girl strikes close to home.
I really don’t know much more than what it says on the book jacket. So, would you tell me what you’re reading? I’m always curious, and interested.
What are you reading today?
I'm reading Murder in the Marais by Cara Black, new author to me.
Romance of the Grail by Joseph Campbell and for fun Uncle John's Heavy Duty Bathroom Reader.
Good luck with your radio program.
I just started No Good Deed by Allison Brennan.
That's pretty cool. I liked the book of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK a lot more than the television series.
I'm reading: a science fiction/fantasy kind of steampunk with zombies book, FALLING SKY by Rajan Khanna, as well as a collection of very short (and dark) short stories, B. J. Bourg, ALIVE INTO HELL.
I have books from the library by Lawrence Block (THE GIRL WITH THE DEEP BLUE EYES), Archer Mayor (THE COMPANY SHE KEPT) and Allen Eslems (THE GUISE OF ANOTHER) waiting on the shelf.
Jeff M.
Eskens, that should have read.
I'm reading Gene Wolfe's new SF mystery, A BORROWED MAN.
My favorite among the books I've read lately is After You, a worthy sequel to Jojo Moyes' Me Before You. Currently I am reading Sara Paretsky's Brush Back. I have 5 other books out of one library and 3 in transit from another–yikes!
All the Light we Can not See – I know I am late reading this one – it got so much acclaim last year – just started it but it is very good.
I just finishedMagnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. It was about a hundred pages too long.
Reading The Other Daughter by Lauren Willig. What's an "extortion breakfast," Lesa?! Sounds fun?!
~Tricia
Hi Everyone! Thank you. Interesting titles in that whole group. I took my only sick leave of the year this morning for my annual eye exam, so only had time to get online now. I do enjoy seeing all your selections.
Tricia, The radio station "extorts" breakfast from us before giving us free air time to promote our One Book/One Community program. Or maybe it's the reverse. We extort air time by providing breakfast. This radio station does it with a number of organizations, and, in fact, we book it almost a year ahead of time in order to get the air time to talk about One Book.
I am in the middle of The Paris Key. So far it is good. I just returned Trick or Deceit to the library. I enjoyed the light heartedness of it.
I'm wading through the books I've accumulated over time and picked out a YA novel by Bonnie Ramthun called The White Gates. I think it has a mystery and it's a lot about snowboarding. Started well and promises to be a good read.
I have about 100 pages to go on Foreclosure: A Novel by S. D. Thames. It is one of the very few books that I don't really like the main character, but I like the book.
I went in for UPPP surgery yesterday morning and came back this afternoon. The pain pills put me to sleep. Will go back to bed very soon.
The Capitol Center Murder by Mike Gilmore. It's part of the SLED series, which I've never heard of before.
