There I was, feeling good that I read Linda Castillo’s entire book on Saturday, finished another book so I could wrote a book review for a journal, and wrote a book column for the local newspaper. Then, at 4:30 Sunday afternoon, I realized I hadn’t even thought about a book and my blog. I’ve barely started my new book. I’m reading Elizabeth Kane Buzzelli’s A Most Curious Murder. How can a librarian resist a book called “A Little Library Mystery”? I’ve started it, but I’m not very far.
So, even though I just asked, I’d like to know what you’re reading. Did you do better than I did this weekend?
I did have a busy reading weekend, first finishing Bill Pronzini's older "Nameless Detecitve" collection of stories, SCENARIOS, most of which I'd read previously, and reading a couple of ebook collections, 13 CLASSIC STORIES BY 12 MASTERS OF THE GENRE (including Bill Crider, Lee Goldberg, and Max Allan Collins) and L.A. LATE @ NIGHT by Paul D. Marks.
I also read the new Ben H. Winters book, the harrowing UNDERGROUND AIRLINES, most of which takes place in Indianapolis by the way. It posits a world much like our own with one major (huge) difference: Abraham Lincoln was assassinated before his first Inauguration, the Civil War never happened, and slavery remains legal in four Southern states (The "Hard Four"). The protagonist is a former runaway slave who has made a deal with the Feds to track down other slaves and help the government return them to their owners. It's very well written, but I found it impossible to accept his actions, or empathize with his choices. Still, I'm not sorry I read it, though I prefer his Last Detective trilogy.
I read Michael Connolly's The Crossing and am about to start The Language of Sisters by Cathy Lamb.
Just finished Goldberg & Evanovich's THE PURSUIT. Haven't begun a new one yet.
I just finished Dead End Street by Sheila Connolly. I'm not sure what I'm going to read next.
Current book is "The Tumbling Turner Sisters." I'm enjoying it. I have an audio review overdue for LJ and am almost finished with another audio for LJ. (I like to have the print book at hand when I write the actual review.)
Received The Necessary Murder of Nonie Blake by Terry Shames, Take the Monkey and Run by Laura Morrigan and Miss Lizzie by Walter Satterthwait for my birthday. My husband and kids are book people too. 🙂 Just started The Necessary Murder of Nonie Blake.
I found Lee Robinson's Lawyer for the Dog on the library shelves and read it one sitting. It and its follow-on, Lawyer for the Cat, are well
written and very engaging. I'm hoping for more in the series. On the advice of a couple of your commenters, I picked up Andy and Don (Griffith and Knotts) and found it to be comprehensive and very interesting, written by Don's brother-in-law. I'm just starting Linda O. Johnston's Bite the Biscuit.
I just started the short story collection "American Housewife" by Helen Ellis. It's hilarious so far, but it's very short and I don't know what to read next!
-Becky K.
Just read Marcia Miller's New Sharon McCone novel. Love this series!
I read Laura Levine's "Death of a Trophy Wife," and a theoretically nonfiction book about the paranormal called Lost Powers by J. Douglas Kenyon.
Started on Clive Cussler's The Mirage, one of the Oregon Files series.
I'm so glad so many of you answered today. Reminded me of some books I want to read – Take the Monkey and Run, Lawyer for the Cat. I have a Sheila Connolly to get to. How many of you feel as if there are so many books, so little time?
I just started LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE, a novel by Anthony Doerr, read by Zach Appelman
It's excellent. I'm sure the hard copy is just as engaging.
It's not a cozy but the WWII France setting is made personal and real.
We were in the Chicago are watching our grandsons' last baseball games so not much reading going on. I did finish The Memory of Lemon by Judith Fertig on the drive home to Columbus. Dinner at Rosie's by Danielle Hawkins is on my nightstand.
I just finished "Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World" by Adam Grant. This is fascinating theory on why and how brilliant ideas succeed or fail and some other stuff too about human behavior. Highly recommended.
I'm working on The Silence of the Library by Miranda James, which I started over the weekend. I finished The Sound of Murder by Cindy Brown on Saturday.
I have The Memory of Lemon somewhere. Thank you, everyone! I love to see what you're reading!
