While I’m in the middle of reading for Library Journal right now, I did find the time to read a nonfiction picture book that I bought. It’s so good that I’m planning to use it when/if I read to my class of third graders again this year. Suzi Eszterhas is a wildlife photographer who spent three years in Kenya. Her experiences there led to the book, Moto and Me: My Year as a Wildcat’s Foster Mom. Park rangers rescued a two-week-old serval wildcat, and asked Eszterhas to foster it, raising him to be released back into the wild. The book is gorgeous, with lovely photographs of the growing servel.
What are you reading or listening to this week? I’m always interested!
Posting early since this is a travel day for a long weekend away to Lake Ontario (Kingston).
I am reading some new authors this week (for me):
HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE by Kellye Garrett (fun debut featuring a sassy wannabe actress)
A GAME OF DECEIT by K.A. Davis (another debut novel by the excellent mystery blogger: Cinnamon & Sugar and a Bit of Murder)
HACKED by Ray Daniel featuring (Boston-based mysteries featuring computer hacker Tucker)
And I love that I got an ARC for the newest Charlie Fox book by Zoe Sharp called FOX HUNTER. An excellent series featuring a female bodyguard/protector.
I finished a Paris Year by Janice MacLeod. I liked it but not as much as Paris Letters.
I should finish up Beach House for Rent by Mary Alice Monroe today.
Today we are getting all the rain that passed through Chicagoland yesterday so it will be a good day to curl up with a book 🙂
I'm reading the latest John Grisham, CAMINO ISLAND. I haven't read anything by him in years, but this one's about rare books, manuscript theft, independent bookstores, and writers. I couldn't resist. So far it's pretty entertaining.
I am just starting The Late Show by Michael Connelly.
Since I'm in the middle of getting ready for my Mom's 90th birthday party this Saturday I'm re-reading a funny paranormal romance, The Vampire's Mail Order Bride by Kristen Painter.
I tried to comment earlier (only Grace's was there then) but had a problem. Anyway, I have two library books waiting which will go to the top of the list:
Michael Connelly, The Late Show (just finished watching season 3 of Bosch)
Linda Castillo, Down a Dark Road
Current reading? I finally finished the massive (150 ss) Saki collection and I'm nearly done with Ann Beattie's latest, The Accomplished Guest: Stories. I've read all of her previous collections, and I'm enjoying this one more than I'd anticipated.
Also reading my first Martha Wells SF book, the short All Systems Red: The Murderbot Diaries.
I did download two more collections. From the library was Joseph Heywood's Harder Ground: More Woods Cop Stories, his second collection set in the UP of Michigan. Also bought (cheap) Richard Christian Matheson's Dystopia: Collected Stories (of "dread and the 'irreal'.").
And I have Matchup (ed. Lee Child) ready to start soon.
Travel day for me tomorrow, Grace. Enjoy your weekend!
Sharon, Good to know about the Paris books. I have both of them on my TBR pile.
Bill, I want to read Camino Island. I didn't have time when I had it home the first time, so I'll get it again.
Michael Connelly doesn't disappoint, Lori.
Sandy, I hope it's a wonderful party & your mother enjoys it.
Jeff, Sorry for the problems, whatever they were. Finished Saki! Congratulations!
I reread Robert Lawson's The Great Wheel (published posthumously in 1957). I read it when I was 10 or 11. It's about construction of the first Ferris wheel for the 1893 World's Fair. When the library-bound copy (purchased with LSCA collection development funds in the 1970's) turned up on the discard shelf I took it home. I remembered parts of the story but by no means all of it. Of course in the decades since I've learned a lot more about the World's Fair and immigration. That knowledge enhanced my re-reading and I really enjoyed it. Robert Lawson is one of my favorite illustrators. I love the detail in his pen-and-ink drawings.
Next up: The Address, by Fiona Davis, set at (in) the Dakota apartment building in New York. I heard the author at ALA. My copy is an ARC; publication date is August 1.
I can't believe that I didn't finish any books this week.j
I had Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz ebook on hold through Over Drive with my library and it came available so I downloaded it and started reading it since you can't renew it after your fourteen days. My three books I had listened last week that I was reading got pushed aside.
Oregon Hill is due at the library tomorrow. I will renew it hoping no one has a hold on it so I can keep it and not have to turn it in and put a hold on it again. This book came from another library in another town. Will take weeks to get it back. The other two that I was reading are mine so I have no dead line on them.
Trust you have days that give you plenty of time to read all the books you have stacked up for this week.
📚📚📚📚📚☕️☕️
Till next week.
Last night I attended one of Ellen Kirschman's book launches for her newest series offering, The Fifth Reflection. Ellen is a police psychologist, as is her protagonist, Dot Meyerhoff. Her first two mysteries were fascinating and well written, and I have just started the new one, which is available for 99 cents for the next couple of days at Amazon and other sellers. Give her a try!
Finished Barry Lancet's Spy Across the Table.
Read On Scope by Jack Coughlin, another Marine Sniper story.
Antiques Flee Market by Barbara Allan. Only a couple of more to go in this series.
Once a Crooked Man by David McCallum. Not bad, but I was sort of expecting some spy-jinks.
I really enjoy seeing what you're all reading, or what you don't yet have time to read, in Charlotte's case. But, I'll probably be in that same boat since this is a travel, friend & family trip coming up. I may not get much read, except on the train on Sunday.
Enjoy your reading this next week!
I'm reading The Bookman Histories by Lavie Tidhar and Dorothy Garlock's The Nearness of You.
What is The Bookman Histories, Page?
I'm just starting to listen/read Cover of Snow by Jenny Milchman. It's been so hot here in Arizona lately I wanted something that said "cool" to me! The ceiling fans help and the air conditioner, but running it all the time would send us to the poor house, as my great grandmother Troy would have said! A good book set in winter should help, too!
Have a good trip! I always enjoy your vacation reports and will look forward to photos and vignettes.
Lesa,
Bookman Histories is a steam punk series, below is a description. It's really fun to read.
Containing all three Bookman History novels: "The Bookman Camera Obscura"; "The Great Game"; "The Bookman". Call in the Quiet Council! The mysterious and glamorous Lady De Winter is one of their most valuable agents. A despicable murder inside a locked and bolted room on the Rue Morgue in Paris is just the start…The Great Game When Mycroft Holmes is murdered in London, it is up to retired shadow executive Smith to track down his killer…and stumble upon the greatest conspiracy of his life! File Under: Steampunk; Alternate History!; Diabolical Anarchists; Murder Most Foul; and, The End of Days.
I'm reading Written Off by EJ Copperman
I just finished the wonderful Karen Dionne's The Marsh King's Daughter – all the reviews are on target. Still reading Deborah Crombie's Garden of Lamentations…almost done Dying Breath by Heather Graham, started Song of the Lion by Anne Hillerman…ready to start Blues in the Night by a new to me author Rochelle Krich.
I'm about to finish The Detachment by Gary Reilly — it's the 2nd book in a trilogy about the Vietnam War period. Then I must shift to doing an edit read of the advance review copy of Wishing Caswell Dead, my historical mystery set in Frontier Illinois in the early 1800s, to be released by Five Star in December.
Loving The Paris Spy by Susan MacNeil and finished listening to The Water's Edge by Sarah Gruen, will write a gushing review today!
Off to the doctor's office!
