I’ll never catch up with my friend, Kaye Wilkinson Barley. She’s been reading about Paris for months. But, I’m a third of a way through John Baxter’s forthcoming book, Montparnasse: Paris’s District of Memory and Desire. That’s the neighborhood we’re staying in when we go to Paris this weekend. I also read a beautiful book called Doorways of Paris.
So, I’ll be gone next Thursday. It’s going to be up to all of you to lead the discussion. This is still a place where you can all come to talk about your books. I hope you do. I’ll miss all of you.
So, what are you reading this week? I’m eager to know.
I'm sure you will have a GREAT trip. Paris is one of my favorite cities, though it's been too long since we've been there. If you can, the best way is just to walk and walk. Have a fabulous time.
I finished Richard Christian Matheson's Collected Stories, DYSTOPIA, and I'm just finishing THE RAT CATCHERS' OLYMPICS by Colin Cotterill, set in Moscow in 1980. Not sure what I'm going to read next, but it will probably include another Ed Hoch short story collection, THE FUTURE IS OURS (his collected science fiction stories). I need to go pick up the new Craig Johnson at the library, and that will probably come before Peter Robinson and the Rachel Caine Great Library book, but we'll see.
Again, have a wonderful trip.
Have a fab time in Paris!
I'm reading THE LAST STAND, a collection of two novellas (the titles are "A Bullet for Satisfaction" and "The Last Stand") by Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins. It's from Hard Case Crime. Don't know what I'll be starting next.
Thank you for your good wishes for the trip.
I hope you like the Craig Johnson, Jeff.
Bill, It's been way too long since I've read a Max Allan Collins book.
I only managed to finish one book this week.
Spirit of Steamboat by Craig Johnson. I enjoyed it. First time I had read any of his books. I will try more. This book was different from what I have watched about Longmire on TV and Netflix.
I am reading Rapture in Death number four in the series by J D Robb. It is an ebook borrowed from Overdrive. Book five is included in this ebook. Not sure if I will be able to finish them before my fourteen days run out. I had to read the Johnson book first. Both books came the same time. That seems to happen quite frequently. Might have to put it on hold and wait for it again.
Lesa, I trust your whole trip will be a blessed trip, from the beginning to the end. May it be more than you ever dreamed of. Enjoy all the fabulous food and especially the pastries. All the pictures of their candy and pastries would make the whole trip worth it. I will pray for you and your traveling friends.
Looking forward to what you will be sharing with us when you are back.
Enjoy your book reading time.

I've been too busy doing yard work to read much this past week. I'm going to start the new October Daye book, THE BRIGHTEST FELL by Seanan McGuire
Lesa, Have a delightful trip but how can you not in Paris?!
This week I finished The Secret Wife by Gill Paul. I enjoyed it so much I am going to check out some of her other titles.
I also read The Essence of Malice by Ashley Weaver. The Amory and Milo Ames' books are lots of fun and stylish. I always wish they were a series on PBS when I read them. This one was much better than the last one but the ending was a little out of left field.
Now I am reading Keep Me Posted by Lisa Beazley.
More time to read this week with my beloved Tribe on their West Coast trip. I can't stay up that late to watch The Baseball 🙂
Safe travels! Sharon
This week I finished my first book by Lee Child, No Middle Name. A wonderful introduction to Jack Reacher. I also finished Hell's Detective by Michael Logan. A fun read. I so liked this book too. Because I enjoyed All Systems Red by Martha Wells, I am now reading an earlier book by her, The Wizard Hunters. I'm also started Murder in G Major by Alexia Brown. A mystery with a ghost.
Safe travel, Leas!
I read Dukkha: Reverb by Loren W. Christenson, a "Sam Reeves Martial ARts Thriller" that takes place in modern Vietnam. Not too bad, but it's hard to believe a veteran police officer could be a naive as Sam Reeves.
Attack of the Bounty Hunters by Steven Gordon, a light space opera about an agent operating on a world governed by libertarian dogma.
Deadly Distance by LT Ryan, something of a Men's Adventure type deal about an agent going after a child abduction ring.
The Athena Project by Brad Thor, not really part of the Scott Harvath series, but he makes a cameo. I think this was supposed to be a pilot for new series.
Nimitz Class by Patrick Robinson, a techno thriller about the search for a submariner who torpedoed an aircraft carrier during peace time.
I'm reading '9 Months in Tibet' by Rupert Wolfe Murray. Rupert decided to travel from Scotland to China – he had little money, no particular skills and no back up, he just took things as they came – he has an enviable ability not to worry about where the next meal/bed/ride is coming from. (His mother was Stephanie Wolfe Murray, the recently deceased founder of Canongate Publishing here in Edinburgh – she was a very enterprising and brave woman, so presumably that's where he gets it from!) So far it's a great read – it rolls along at a tremendous pace, and he's very good at focusing on the fascinating details. Last year I heard Rupert speak about the book and his travels – me made it all sound so interesting, and he's so laid back and calm about it all, you'd think he'd just been on a day trip.
Lesa, as I said before – Bon Voyage!
I'll be darned, Lesa. I'm reading the very same book you are about Montparnasse. How 'bout that?! and loving it! See you soon! xxoo
Thank you, everyone, for your kind wishes for Paris. When asked what we wanted to see, I said Versailles and Giverny. We're going to see both. But, I also said pastries and chocolate and hot chocolate. We'll need to walk and walk and walk, Jeff.
Charlotte, I'm glad you liked Spirit of Steamboat!
And, Karen! You liked Hell's Detective. I'm glad.
Thank you, everyone, for sharing your reading. I hope you do the same next Thursday!
Have a wonderful time in Paris!
I have started Deep Down True by Juliette Faye and I love it. Added another of her books to my wish list. Also started an audio book, Caught by Harlan Coben. Not liking the narrator. She reads to fast and the male voice that she is imitating is annoying. Also too many characters introduced at once.
