As I said earlier, I’m feeling a little overwhelmed, so I’m looking forward to a long weekend for Christmas reading. What are you reading right now?
I’m finishing Nora Roberts’ Guardians Trilogy. Book Three is Island of Glass. I know my sister said she didn’t care for the fantasy elements in this series. But, this latest book is set in County Clare in Ireland, and we were there earlier this year. The descriptions of the cliffs and the wild water are so familiar that I’m finding the book fun.
Do you have time to read this week? What have you been reading?
Yes, I will have to make time to reading this week…in between several group walks and snowshoe outings. I choose several new (to me) holiday-themed titles. This year's choices are: FELIZ NAVIDEAD by Ann Myers, WE WISH YOU A MURDEROUS CHRISTMAS by Vicki Delany and EGGNOG MURDER by Leslie Meier, Lee Hollis and Barbara Ross. Book Depository is supposed to deliver my copy of SNOWBLIND by Ragnar Jonasson by Christmas Eve, so I will that to the list too. I also have 27 library books checked out that are due by January 2-4, so my short shack of TBR mystery books is pretty high.
I don't think Jackie has read that one yet, Lesa, though she really liked the other Nora Roberts books set in Ireland she has read over the years.
I've started the first of Olen Steinhauer's Milo Weaver spy trilogy, THE TOURIST, after watching and enjoying his (creator and writer) BERLIN STATION series on Epix. Also, I've moved on to another collection of Howard Waldrop short stories, HORSE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR. I still need to get back to and finish the Brian Freemantle book (MADRIGAL FOR CHARLIE MUFFIN), but these two are library downloads so come first.
27 library books! Grace, that makes me feel a lot better.
Jeffrey: Ha ha, I really don't think I can get through them all 27 books in less than 3 weeks but there are a couple of ebooks and books on hold that I cannot renew, so I will give it my best shot!!
And I forgot to mention earlier, Jeffrey, that I am glad that someone else likes reading the CHARLIE MUFFIN books. I read them in the 1980s and was so glad that Brian Freemantle brought Charlie back for the Red Star trilogy a few years ago.
I have trouble reading fantasy too. sigh! But I would love to go to Ireland and see some of the towns that my ancestors came from.
Reading Factory Girls by Josanne La Valley.
Currently re-reading an old favorite, Ross Thomas' BRIARPATCH.
Lesa, Jackie says thank you! She read and loved the first two – the mermaid and the other one – but forgot the third one was coming out.
I just finished a Summerlong by Peter S Beagle. Not sure what I'm going to read next.
Jeff, Tell Jackie I said she's welcome! And, it's so nice to read about people who have TBR piles like mine. Thank you for talking about them, Grace & Jeff!
After today, I'm off for 5 days. Yay! Reading time!
Lesa, you were right when you wrote that I would like No Cats Allowed by Miranda James. I enjoyed it so much I checked to see if the library had anymore on ebooks so I ould read more,. They didn't have anymore of her books. I will check later to see if the library in town has any in print.
I am reading The Cereal Murders by Diane Mott Davidson. First time I have read any of her books.
Lesa: Enjoy your 5 day break…plenty of reading time, I hope!!
Charlotte, I hope you're able to get more of Miranda James' books. It's a very good series. Diane Mott Davidson was really the forerunner of all those foodie mysteries, if you ask me.
Thank you, Grace. Like you, I have so much reading to do. It's unbelievable. I need this time!
I'm currently reading Dying for a Date by Cindy Samples, a local author around here.
Just finished BLOOD RUBIES – Jane Cleland. Her books are always so good!
I am reading A Confectioner's Tale A Novel of Paris by Laura Madeleine. I just finished Plaid and Plagiarism by Molly MacRae. Have not put my finger on why I didn't like it more. Perhaps because it was the first book of the series and she is setting it up. I like the setting and the characters so I'm going to give the second one a try.
I'm reading "In Sunlight or In Shadow: Stories Inspired by the Paintings of Edward Hopper" edited by Lawrence Block. Hopper is one of my favorite painters so I was very intrigued by this book. The stories are good so far and I'm sure I'll never look at the paintings they are based on in the same way ever again. In fact, I might start making up background stories in my head for any paintings that I come across in future.
I just finished Shannon Baker's excellent debut of a new series, Stripped Bare. It's probably my favorite series mystery of 2016.
Now I'm reading Code Name Verity, a gripping YA novel by Elizabeth Wein.
I've been reading all the books in Mary Pryor's Hugo Marston series which takes place in Paris.
I re-read Margaret Maron's "Corpus Christmas," and loved it as much as ever.
Now I'm re-reading another favorite, Rosamunde Pilcher's "Winter Solstice."
