I hope you’re all around today because I’m a day early with this question. I promised Thursday for a book review – go figure. I’ll be reviewing Claire Booth’s second Hank Worth mystery set in Branson, Missouri, Another Man’s Ground. In fact, that’s what I’m reading right now. Once I finish it, I’ll be picking up Kevin Hearne’s Besieged: Stories from The Iron Druid Chronicles. If I finish it by Tuesday (and I should), I can pass it on to my nephew. I introduced him to this series, and he and I both enjoy it.
What are you reading or listening to this week? You can still tell us on Thursday if you only stop by then. We’d love to know!
I'm still working my way through The Bookman Histories, it's a really fun steam punk adventure with lots of literary characters we all know.
Yep, we're around. Well, I am.
I finished Shalom Auslander's excellent memoir, FORESKIN'S LAMENT. I'm more than halfway through Joseph Heywood's collection of stories about game wardens/"Conservation Officers" (mostly if not all women this time) in northern Michigan, HARDER GROUND, which I'm enjoying as much as the first collection.
If you don't object to the paranormal mixed with police procedurals, you might try Michael F. Haspil's first novel, GRAVEYARD SHIFT. His protagonist Alex Romer is a Miami police detective on the "Nocturn Squad" now that vampires have had "The Reveal" acknowledging their existence. But Romer himself is not just a cop. He was the Pharaoh Menkaure in Ancient Egypt, much as his vampire partner Marcus lived in Ancient Rome. We haven't had the back story of how they got where they are, but so far I'm enjoying the fast moving, hard-boiled action.
The new Linda Castillo is up next.
I finished David Baldacci's NO MAN"S LAND. This was my first book by Mr. Baldacci so I don't know if this book was his usual style. I definitely liked it. Especially the ending. I've started RANDOM ROAD by Thomas Kies.
Jeff, Thanks for the Haspil recommendation. I just hopped over to the library and put it on hold.
Page! Steam punk with literary characters. I'm going to have to check that one out.
And, I'm in with the police procedural with paranormal, Jeff. I'm going to look for that one, too. Thank you for the suggestion!
I'll be interested to see what you think of Random Road, Karen.
I just finished reading Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz.
Now I will go back to reading,
Oregon Hill by Howard Owen
I Need a Lifeguard Everywhere but the Ool by Lisa Scottoline & Francesca Serritella
How Sweet the Sound by Deborah Heal
Had to set all the above aside to read the ebook Magpie Murders that was from the library.
Happy reading to everyone this coming week.

I gave up on The Supremes and the Happy Heartache Blues-it was not nearly as charming as his first book and kind of a downer (my daughter finished it and said I made a good decision). I finished The Café by the Sea by Jenny Colgan which I liked. I loved The Lost Letter by Jillian Cantor and now I am reading South Pole Station: A Novel by Ashley Shelby. After reading your review of The Dress in the Window yesterday I decided to remove it from my reserved list at the library. Too many other books to read. Thank you.
Just now I finished David Rosenfelt's Collared. I love his writing style, which combines an interestIng legal trial and an engaging sense of humor, with a dog always involved in some way. His protagonist, Andy Carpenter, inherited a lot of money and does doesn't need to work as an attorney but frequently gets sucked in–a refreshing change from the usual tropes. And the supporting cast of characters are mostly hilarious.
I just finished Terri Shames' The Unsettling Crime for Samuel Craddock, an ARC I won from you some weeks back (I know, my bad), but I loved it and will be seeking out more of Terri's books. I also finished Elly Griffin's The Chalk Pit. I love this series and I truly thought this was another great entry. I also read Linda Fairstein's Killer Look, which is a fast read, but boy, those New Yorkers are snarky.
Charlotte, I'm waiting for that Scottoline/Seratella book.
I understand, Sharon, having other good ones to read.
Rosenfelt is on my someday, maybe, list, Margie. People love his books. I just don't read too many lawyer ones.
Andi! I don't care when you read the ones you win. I'm just glad you loved it!
Lesa, the Carpenter books are legal but more cozy to me. It's more his life, his love, and his great dog. I think you'd like them.
I know, just what you need, another author. My friend Maggie was in.heaven when she got to visit him and have two dozen rescud Golden retrievers jump on her.
I believe that he has since moved to New England.
I finished MEDDLING KIDS which was sort of a cross between Scooby Doo and HP Lovecraft. It was OK but not something I'd read again. I tried reading SLAVES OF THE SWITCHBOARD OF DOOM but couldn't get into it. Now I'm re-reading an old favorite, THE THREAD THAT BINDS THE BONES by Nina Kiriki Hoffman.
Thanks Jeffery, I have GRAVEYARD SHIFT out from the library. I think I'll try it next
Now, Jeff. That's a description that does appeal to me. You're right! Just what I need. I picked up GRAVEYARD SHIFT. I also picked up the new Krewe of Hunters book here at the library today. (smile)
What a description, Sandy – "a cross between Scooby Doo and HP Lovecraft". I can't even imagine.
I read Archie Meets Nero Wolfe by Robert Goldsborough, which I liked, even though I oppose these sorts of unnecessary origin tales.
The Diamond Caper by Peter Mayle.
The Science of Game of Thrones, even though I don't watch the show.
Black Wind By Clive Cussler. Supposed to be a Dirk Pitt novel, but is really a Dirk Pitt Jr novel.
Silent Vector by Jonathan Dyer, a retro Cold War novel.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, 5 years after everybody else read it, I know.
I am currently reading Here and Gone by Haylen Beck!
Would you mind checking out my book reviews blog at El's Book Reviews and possibly give it a follow? Super excited to read your posts!
– El
Steve and I had so much fun in Branson, I should read Another Man's Ground. Thank you for that information!
I just started Dark Rites by Heather Graham, still reading Manderlay Forever by Tatiana de Rosnay, Murder in G Major by Alexia Gordon and will be starting The Chalk Pit by Elly Griffiths.
I'm reading "Moving Is Murder" by Sara Rosett (#1 in Ellie Avery series)
I am enjoying If the Creek Don't Rise by Leah Wiess and have picked out Inside the O'Briens by Lisa Genova (Father in family has Huntington's Disease). I like writers who only produce one book a year! I want to read of Lisa Genova's and I am almost caught up.
I'm reading an advance review copy of Shannon Baker's Dark Signal. It's the second book in the Kate Fox mystery series.
Glen, I like your clarifications!
El, Done. Checked it out, and followed.
Reine, Read The Branson Beauty first. I haven't read it, but I liked this one enough that I wish I had.
Gram, I have a new Heather Graham from the library, but don't remember the name of it.
Tari, I'll be interested to see what you think of the Sara Rosett books.
That's the one Lisa Genova I haven't read, Carol.
I hope you're enjoying it, Patricia.
Lesa, Thanks for the tip! I will read The Branson Beauty first.
I've been reading some very good stuff! ARCs by Con Lehane, Harlan Coben, Will Thomas AND Alice Hoffman's Rules of Magic which I loved beyond words. And I read Anthony Horowitz's Magpie Murders which I also loved. Next up is – – – I'm not sure!
Just finished The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. Excellent ! Highly recommend. Next up is the new Michael Connelly book or The Force by Winslow. Decisions, decisions.
Thanks for thinking of your nephew(s)! I need to check your blog more often as I have gotten in the habit of just doing facebook (bleh!)
Friday, so I won't comment on what I am reading!!
