Technically, I should have finished a book to review today, but I spent time on the phone the last couple nights talking family genealogy with my mom and sisters. So, I didn’t finish either of the books I’m reading. I’m reading Past Crimes by Glen Erik Hamilton, one of the Edgar nominees for Best First novel. Sixty pages in, and I’m impressed. I’m also reading Where We Belong by Hoda Kotb, a fascinating nonfiction book about people who find where they really belong in life. Reviews will be forthcoming on both of them. And, sooner or later, I’ll have an interview with Glen Erik Hamilton.
What are you reading today? Fiction? Nonfiction? Both? Are you one of those people who read a couple books at a time? (I am.)
So, I don't usually read more than one book at a time, if you don't count what I'm listening to on audio (which I don't). However, I'm in the middle of The Gates of Evangeline (loving it), but I picked up the graphic novel Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant? and am almost through with it. I was on the fence for a long time about the GN. I had heard it was too abrasive and I'd also heard it was wonderful. Decided I would see for myself. For me, it's honest and yes, a bit abrasive about her parents. But, most of the situations that she describes are ones I lived through with my parents. I suspect this is her version of therapy, which I did in a different manner. After all, Roz Chast is a writer. One part I just read related the dreaded 'phone call from the care center'. That really made me remember and I truly felt her dread and horror and shame over feeling that way. LOL
I'm working on Scene of the Brine by Mary Ellen Hughes.
I'm about halfway through Ellen Kirschman's The Right Wrong Thing. The protagonist is a police psychologist, which Ellen is in real life (she's a fellow Sister in Crime) so it seems quite authentic. It's the follow-up to her Burying Ben, also terrific. I recently finished Cleo Coyle's Dead to the Last Drop, which I thought was excellent. Lesa, I have read Past Crimes and really enjoyed it. Kay, I recently read the Gates of Evangeline and agree with your assessment–intriguing!
I'm reading Death of a Chocolate Cheater by Penny Pike, the second in the Food Truck series.
Thank you, everyone. Kay, I'm sure it isn't easy reading the GN since it hits home. I'm glad you're enjoying The Gates of Evangeline, though. Mark, I started a cozy the other day (shall remain unnamed), and just couldn't get into it, so moved on. Glen, thank you. I always enjoy seeing what people are reading.
Margie, I wish I had that info when I was doing a Tweet Chat today. I would have passed on the info about Ellen Kirschman's book. Someone was looking for fiction featuring a psychologist. I gave her Dennis Palumbo's books.
I'm reading Killing Trail by Margaret Mizushima. It's a K-9 mystery and I'm really enjoying it.
I'm reading Radiant Angel, the most recent John Corey thriller from Nelson DeMille.
I finished The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend last night and loved it! Then I started The Rainy Day Sisters by Kate Hewitt before going to sleep.
I am reading The Weight of Shadows by Jose Orduna. Mostly angry feelings come out through his experiences as an immigrant.
I never got to answer this (or see this) because we were (finally!) on the road. But now that we're in Florida at last and all unpacked, m y reading should pick up.
I read a very dark collection of stories called AT THE GATES OF MADNESS by Shaun Meeks (who is Canadian, I believe). I like dark but this was a little twisted even for me. I have another 50+ collections on the Kindle and hope to get through some down here.
First I need to finish LEVIATHAN WAKES, the first book in The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey. Then I can tackle the pile of books I brought with me.
