It’s Thursday! Let’s talk about what we’re reading or listening to this week. I’ve just started Linda Castillo’s forthcoming Kate Burkholder mystery, Down a Dark Road. I love this series. But, I’m also reading a book you probably haven’t heard about.
I have a magnet on my refrigerator that says, “If you don’t talk with your cat about catnip, who will?” It goes right with this book called The American Association of Patriots Presents: How to Talk to Your Cat About Gun Safety and Abstinence, Drugs, Satanism, and Other Dangers That Threaten Their Nine Lives. Funny! For instance, in the chapter on abstinence, it says, “Abstinence helps cats to abstain from other high-risk behaviors, such as hanging out with feral cats, driving while under the influence of catnip, and handling firearms in an unsafe manner.” More on this book at a later date.
In the meantime, what are you reading?
I got my wishlist granted on Netgalley last week, and I now have an ARC of Susan Boyer's LOWCOUNTRY BONFIRE (which you reviewed on release day, Lesa). I enjoy this series and am looking forward to reading the latest Stella Maris mystery.
I am also reading the first 2 books by David Swinson:
THE SECOND GIRL and CRIME SONG.
Oh, good, Grace! I'm glad you received Lowcountry Bonfire. I know you'll enjoy it!
I knew you were going to ask me that today. (Incidentally, like Grace I have Swinson's CRIME SONG on my library shelf.)
I've pretty much come to the conclusion that I'm reading too many books at once. I need to concentrate on one at a time, but…it's tough. I will read a short story from one collection, then one from another (currently, there is a third). Then "just a few authors" in BY THE BOOK (almost hoping that I do not get ideas from them for other books I need) to read. Then, finally, to whatever mystery or other novel I am reading. Oh yes, I forgot the memoir I've started.
Ahhh!!! Help Me!
Current reading, starting with the shorts:
Saki, Complete Collection (now 90% done)
Wells Tower, Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned (got this from David Sedaris recommendation in BY THE BOOK)
Ann Beattie, The Accomplished Guest
Pamela Paul, ed., BY THE BOOK
Andrew Cartmel, The Vinyl Detective: The Run-Out Groove
Anthony Horowitz, Magpie Murders
Shalom Auslander, Foreskin's Lament: A Memoir (another David Sedaris recommendation, and so far he's right – it's hilarious)
I finished Summer Dance by Nan Rossiter earlier this week. It is a continuation of her book, Nantucket. Currently I am reading The Alice Network. I am up to page 120 and not sure why I am not liking it more. It has been on every "must read" list I've come across and has good ratings on Goodreads……………not sure if I am going to stick with it or not. I will have to recommend your book to my cat loving daughter.
That Castillo book is definitely on my radar, by the way.
Discouraging, isn't it, Jeff? I have 5 or 6 books that I want to read RIGHT NOW! And, of course, it doesn't work that way. Darn. I didn't have time to read any more of the Castillo last night, but it's going to be good, as always.
The Alice Network is on one of my TBR piles, Sharon. I don't know when I'll get to it. It will be interesting to see which side I fall on – love it, or, ehh.
I'm reading One Perfect Lie the newest by Lisa Scottoline and I am totally hooked – quite good. I only read one book at a time – don't know how people can stop and switch to other books. I guess I am obsessive as I HAVE to know how the story ends!
Finished Settle for More by Megan Kelly. Read some of it skipped some of it. Hurried through it, it was due at the library yesterday and I didn't won't to renew it. It got good ratings from some and some not so good. It just didn't hold my interest.
Still haven't finished Hide and Seek. I will get back to it soon, I hope.
Almost finished with Only One Way Home by Deborah Heal. I am at the 65% mark
I have so many đź“šlooking at me, hard to choose which to read next.
I really enjoy reading all the comments that are written here. So many new books and authors to learn about each week.
Happy reading to all of you this week.
I forgot to ask in my comment above this question.
Has anyone read Since We Fell by Dennis Lehane? If you have please share what you think about it. I know it has received high ratings. I read a smart amount from a sample from iBooks and I can't decide from that small amount if it is worth getting it.
Thank you.
Let's see…
Read Ghost Ship, the newest book from the Clive Cussler brand. Not bad for a Kurt Austin.
The Grim Sleeper, by Christine Pelisik, about the not infamous enough serial killer in South Central LA.
The Wages of Desire by Stephen Kelly, a sort of Foyle's War knock off.
The Forgotten Soldier by Brad Taylor, newest in the Pike Logan techno-thriller series.
Kill Zone by Jack Coughlin, first book in the Kyle Swanson Sniper series.
How to Play Golf Better, Faster, by Kalliope Barlis. Maybe someday, I won't suck at golf.
Donna, That's another book on a TBR pile.
I know what you mean, Charlotte. I can't help you on the Dennis Lehane question. I don't know if another reader can. I haven't read it.
Love that last comment, Glen. Good luck with the golf. My husband once offered me lessons. I said you come back more frustrated than when you go out there. Why would I want to learn to play?
I've been on a fantasy kick lately. I'm currently reading Late Eclipses by Seanan McGuire.
Earlier in the week I finished
A Brother's Price by Wen Spencer about a world where women are in charge and men are property to be traded or sold for breeding.
Boundary Born by Mellisa Olson
Gwendy's Button Box by Stephen King which was in the adult library but probably should have been listed as YA
I am in the middle of Ginny Moon by Benjamin Ludwig, about an adopted teen with autism. Recently finished Kiss Carlo by Adriana Trigiani. Four of my holds at the library arrived at the same time and were picked up yesterday–Bearly Departed by Meg Macy, The Little French Bistro by Nina George, The Whole Way Home by Sarah Creech, and The Shark Club by Ann Kidd Taylor. Can't decide which to start first!
I just checked and see I have four more books waiting to be picked up at the library, including Matchup.
They'll have to wait until next week.

I go on those kicks sometimes, too, Sandy. In fact, I was suggesting fantasy books today to readers on Twitter.
How was Kiss Carlo, Margie? I have a library copy at home that I need to read soon.
I got you, Jeff. Too many at one time.
I'm deep into re-reading the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. I'm currently on #6 – and I can't remember the title! All dozen books are so closely titled together that beyond the first four I get confused. I suppose that's why I end up just reading the whole series and losing definition along the way. Each book is more like a chapter in a real big tome. It's all a lot of fun, but I may have to break things up just to get that separation back into the ongoing story. I need to take a breath and write some reviews!
No, you don't, Sandie. Enjoy the books. Don't worry about reviews.
I just finished The Alchemist and this morning started The Zookeeper's Wife.
Have started The Little Old Lady Strikes Again by Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg. It is a translation from Swedish. I read some review and they did't thinl it was a funny as they thought it would be. That lowered my expectations so now I am laughing and enjoying this book. Continuing with the audio book by Baldacci too.
