It’s Thursday! Time to talk about what we’re reading. I can’t wait to see your lists.
I’m reading a novel that was recommended by my friend, Kaye Wilkinson Barley. It’s a debut, The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan. It’s beautiful so far. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it has a happy ending for at least one of the lonely people in the book. I’ll let you know when I finish it.
So, what are you reading this week? We’re eager for that conversation!
I'm reading THE PLUTONIUM BLONDE by two writers whose names I can't remember. No relation to ATOMIC BLONDE as far as I can tell. This one's an SF crime story narrated by the last licensed private-eye in the world. The setting is 2057, and the intent is entirely humorous.
Two short story collections: ALL BUT IMPOSSIBLE by Edward D. Hoch, the fourth Dr. Sam Hawthorne collection of "impossible" crime stories. Hoch was a master at this and I would definitely recommend all of the collections. Second is DYSTOPIA by Richard Christian Matheson, a group of mostly quite short stories.
I've finally started the latest Monkeewrench/Magozzi and Rolseth book by P. J. Tracy, NOTHING STAYS BURIED. I'm really having a tough time keeping up with the library books AND the stuff I've bought.
Lesa, The Keeper of Lost Things was one of favorites! I think you will be pleased with the ending. This week I read The Cottingley Secret by Hazel Gaynor. I absolutely loved everything about this book. Then I read A Mother Like Mine by Kate Hewitt which was my least favorite of three Hartley-By-The Sea novels (Rainy Day Sisters was my favorite). Now I am reading Mrs. Saint and the Defectives by Julie Lawson Trimmer. So far it is a winner. Have a safe and Happy Labor Day Weekend!
I finished reading Immortal in Death, book three in the series. Written by J D Robb. I am waiting for book four and five in ebooks from the library. Wish I had them now. I think I am number three on the waiting list. Still could be a long wait.
I am back to reading One Coffee With, written by Margaret Moron. For me chapters one through three were just not working well, chapter four stated becoming interesting and I trust it stays that way.
May your weekend be filled with a lot of reading time.
Till next Thursday, be safe.
I used to like Edward D. Hoch's stories in Ellery Queen. I should look for those collections. Thanks, Jeff!
Sharon, That's good to know that you liked it so much. Thank you! I have The Cottingley Secret at home from the library. I need to get to that.
Charlotte, I hope you get into One Coffee With. I hope it keeps the pace. Thank you! I work Sunday at the library, but that just means I have next Friday off. So, two long weekends of reading time in a row!
I read Harry Harrison's Adventures of The Stainless Steel Rat. Not bad Sci-Fi, but seems a little quaint now.
The Invasion of Heaven by Michael B. Koep, a sort of Lovecraftian deal about painting nobody can see.
The Last Mile by David Baldacci, about which, the less said, the better.
City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty, the usual fantasy stuff with a Middle Eastern setting.
American Wolf, by Nate Blakeslee about the introduction of wolves to Yellowstone.
Buzz Ride by P.M. White, about a guy who tries to be an Uber driver for a while.
Janissaries by Jerry Pournelle, an ERB type novel about mercenaries taken to an alien world.
I'm between books but I just picked up a 1932 novelization of the original King Kong movie at an antique store so I'm going to read that next.
Glen, Your reading sounds a little iffy this week.
Oh, that sounds fun, Sandy. Enjoy!
One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus.
I am finishing The Lynching: The Epic Courtroom Battle That Brought Down the Klan by Laurence Leamer. So many horrible things have happened in this book that I am glad the it is ending. Hard to believe that two men took a human life just to impress the Klan. I am still glad I know what happened though.
Also still reading Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea. The details of the people trying to survive the famine are horrendous. I feel so bad for what the people of North Korea have been through. When they got food aid from the world, the leaders did not care enough to get it to the people needed it so badly. What a mess!
Will be switching to a more upbeat subjects for a while!
I am reading Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson. I highly recommend it.
