I’m down to the last 100 pages of Joshua Hammer’s The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu. For years, a young man, Abdel Kader Haidara, traveled across the Sahara and along the Niger River, searching for valuable manuscripts that told the cultural history of northern Africa. He was successful, and his work helped to make Timbuktu a cultural center again. Then, Al Qaeda showed up. This is a story of devastation and courage. And, I haven’t even arrived at the part of the book in which Haidara and other librarians smuggled manuscripts out to save them. But, for centuries, the people of Timbuktu and Mali have preserved and hidden manuscripts to save them from the wars of history.
So, where is your current book set? Today, let’s talk about where you are reading. (And, I’ll admit I had to look up Mali on a map to find it.)
I have just starting reading Deadly Jewels by Jeannette de Beauvoir which is set in Montreal, Canada.
Title tells it all – MURDER AT THE 42nd STREET LIBRARY by Con Lehane.
Max Allan Collins' latest Nate Heller, BETTER DEAD.
I finished Moonshadows by Julie Weston last night and I have about 50 pages left in The Deathly Portent by Elizabeth Bailey. I am mostly reading in my living room.
I'm reading Grave Consequences by David Thurlo which is set in New Mexico.
Jeffrey, I'm also reading Murder at the 42nd St. Library (NYC).
I'm reading Los Angeles with Sayonara Slam by Naomi Hirahara.
I'm currently reading The Cuckoo in Spring by Elizabeth Cadell. It's set in Yorkshire and London (so far). This is one of four Cadell titles that have been made available as e-books by her family. Many more to follow. Given that her print books are hard to find, and sometimes expensive, it's great to see this delightful author getting new exposure.
Violations of Causality: A Skip Gershwin Mystery by Herb Guggenheim.
It was fun to read your answers. Some of you told me where the books are set. Some told me where you are physically reading the book. Others told me what you're reading. And, Dean! Elizabeth Cadell. I haven't read Elizabeth Cadell since I was a teenager, so it's been 40 years. Hard to believe. Thanks, everyone for reading along!
I am just finishing The Summer Before the War. Hammer's book sounds riveting, just checked out the review too.
I am reading The Rejected Writers' Book Club. So far I am enjoying it. I finished the last of the Kate Parker Victorian Bookshop Mysteries-The Conspiring Woman. It was not my favorite of the series.
HA! I am also reading The Rejected Writer's Club which is set in Southlea, Washingtom, I am on the road trip with the librarian and te crazy women of this club! Lot of Laughter in this book!'''C
I'm reading "Miss You Once Again" which is women's fiction by one of our local authors Kelly Baugh. Although the main character lives and owns an outside adventure company in Durango, CO, this story takes place in Mississippi when the young woman is the designated family member to handle her grandmother's estate…which includes cleaning out the house and preparing house and yard for sale. The secondary characters include neighbor Granny Bob, and there's now a down home Granny Bob cookbook to accompany the novel. There's lot's of Southern charm in this one.
Hadn't even heard of The Rejected Writers' Club, and two of you are reading it? Interesting. Thanks for sharing, everyone!
