This week, I’m giving away one new police procedural and one classic. Cruel as the Grave is Cynthia Harrod-Eagles’ latest Detective Inspector Bill Slider mystery. A poor detective would call it an open-and-shut case. Fitness trainer Erik Lingoss is found dead in his west London flat, his head smashed by one of his dumbbells. He just dumped his girlfriend, who claims to have found him. There is blood on her clothes and hands. She had means, motive and opportunity. But, Slider and his team aren’t so sure she’s the killer. The victim had friends in high places. There were plenty of people who might have killed him. And, what about that seven hundred pounds in cash under his pillow?
Hillary Waugh’s Last Seen Wearing is one of the earliest police procedurals. It was picked as one of the Library of Congress Crime Classics. Based on a true story, it was considered an accurate portrayal of an official police investigation. Lowell Mitchell, a college student in Massachusetts, went to class, talked with friends, and went to her dorm room. And, then she’s gone, and no one saw her leave, or knows where she went. Police chief Frank Ford, a small-town cop, depends on the facts for his investigation. Everyone tells him what a good, responsible girl Lowell is. But Ford believes she has a secret, and, if he can find it, he’ll break the case wide open.
