Once in a while, Heather Graham, author of the Krewe of Hunters books, and so many others, writes a novella for a holiday. I received a notice about her 2024 Valentine’s Day one. A little late, but it’s worth catching up with a couple of my favorite characters in Roses are Red, But Can Make You Dead. Teresa Grant is a divorcee, still a little in love with her husband. They share a five-year-old daughter, Emma. But, after two years, Teresa has moved on, and has a new man in her life. When she receives a gorgeous arrangement of flowers and chocolates, she assumes it’s from the new man in her life. And, she samples one of the chocolates.
Did Teresa mean to call Angela at the Krewe of Hunters as she fell to the floor? Teresa is a neighbor to Angela and her husband, Jackson Crow. When Jackson breaks into Teresa’s house, they find her barely alive. Unfortunately for the person who wanted to kill her, now it’s not just the local police investigating. Jackson and Angela are on the case, with the help of their FBI team.
There’s never time for character development in a novella. There is time to catch up with Jackson and Angela. And, there’s time to catch up with a ghost who offers assistance at the hospital. Captain Emery Smith served in World War II, but died of natural causes late in life. He still offers help when he can, and he knew Angela and Teresa needed help.
A little mystery, a ghost, and the Krewe of Hunters. Just right for weekend reading.
