The 38th Krewe of Hunters novel by Heather Graham, Voice of Fear, is the third in her recent trilogy featuring the Law triplets. It’s also the best of the three, and the least gruesome. Patrick Law, a criminal psychologist and psychiatrist, teams up with rookie Krewe member, Jordan Wallace, in the latest suspense novel set in the Washington, D.C. area.

Jordan is upset when she first meets Patrick because she knows he sees her as reckless and a little rash. Yes, she should have had backup when she went undercover as a college girl on holiday to the Castleberry Estate resort, but she never expected to be kidnapped from the swimming pool. However, that kidnapping, and the subsequent discovery of all the victims stashed in a warehouse, sets the stage for the takedown of the criminal mastermind known as “John Smith”.

Patrick’s often brought in as a consultant for the Krewe of Hunters, the special FBI group with unique abilities. The group is brought in for what others consider strange or occult situations, or murders with “paranormal” undertones. Colleen, one of Patrick’s sisters, is a member of the Krewe, and Megan is a book editor now engaged to a Krewe agent. All three of the triplets have the special “weird” ability to deal with the occult.

Patrick and his sisters are all friends with Sergeant Alfred Parker. Alfie is the ghost of a dead police officer, and he’s been involved with the murders and “The Embracer” from the very beginning. That case of serial killers has evolved into the search for a mastermind whose abilities to put together a network for drugs, sex trafficking, guns, and murder for hire goes back to the large scale police event in which Alfie was killed. Now, he continues to hang around because he’s concerned about a young woman he once tried to help, Susie. When the Krewe rescued victims from the warehouse, Susie’s name came up. Jordan and Patrick both assure Alfie they believe she’s still alive.

As always, there’s sexual attraction between the two primary characters. However, this novel plays out in interview rooms and cemeteries more than the bedroom. And, I didn’t mention that each book in the trilogy adds an additional rescue dog to the group. This time, it’s Patrick’s Irish Wolfhound.

Voice of Fear reunites the members of the Law family, along with their current romantic partners, and other members of the Krewe to finally discover who is the man behind the curtain. Who is the controlling figure who enjoys power, money, and death? It takes the Krewe, the Laws, and several ghosts to save scores of victims, people trapped in one man’s cruel and vicious world.
