Well, I never know what rabbit hole I’ll fall into when I have questions. I will say, though, I may have recommended Kristin Harmel’s Meet Me in Paris to my family, but I won’t say the same for Sierra Voss’ Wed to the Bratva King. However, I did have some reactions to share.
I tumbled down this hole because I came across the term “Bratva” several times. I guess I don’t watch the TV shows and movies where Russian crime syndicates appear. Bratva comes from the Russian for brotherhood or the brothers. It turns out there are also a number of romances that deal with Russian crime syndicates. Now, we’re combining crime and romance. Sierra Voss’ Bratva books are “Age Gap Mafia Romances” in her “Silver Foxes” series. I have a hard time with men in their forties being considered silver foxes. So, the books have young women in the twenties and men in their forties.
The sex is hot, which is fun. But, when I read this one, I was surprised to find the female main character is as strong and determined as the male main character. Both characters voice chapters. And, at least in this one, both are morally gray. They both come from a crime world, and make decisions in that world. That’s the crime fiction aspect. And, as I’m looking at various titles, I see that they have HEA endings. In the romance world, that’s “Happily Ever After”. When I taught Readers’ Advisory, I always stressed a romance had to have a HEA ending.
Quick summary of this book. Ryder Moreno shows up at a church when her father says he has a business opportunity. She has no idea her father wants to sell her in marriage to a member of the Bratva. Her father will then control the Savannah territory, and her new husband, Liev Demsky. will control Miami. But, Ryder’s father never her told her of the marriage plans ahead of time, and Liev has a runaway bride on his hands. It takes time for Ryder to trust Liev, but when they have to fight to stay alive in Miami, and they don’t know who is trying to take them out, they turn to each other, and a few trusted associates to hunt down the opposition.
In other words, Wed to the Bratva King is not at all what I expected. It’s a steamy romance with a crime novel plot and intriguing characters. Not a bad rabbit hole.
