Last night, I spent quite a bit of time talking with my sister about a vacation trip. So, I didn’t get far in my book. My personal recommender suggested Celeste Fletcher McHale’s debut novel, The Secret to Hummingbird Cake. It’s the story of three women who have been friends since they were five. Sounds like typical women’s fiction? My friend assures me it takes an unexpected turn. Set in a small town in Louisiana, it might just be a delightful southern novel.
So, what are you reading today?
I'm reading The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katrina Bivald and have
Mary Burton's upcoming novel of the Morgans Vulnerable as well.
I just finished She's Not There by Joy Fielding and am about to start All Is Not Forgotten by Wendy Walker.
yes, this sounds like my cuppa tea! adding to the list . . .
I just finished reading an ARC of Laura Lippman's "Wilde Lake" and can't say enough good things about it. I love her work, I especially loved this book.
I'm reading All the Birds in the Sky, an SF novel by Charlie Jane Anders.
I'm reading Shifted but the Winds, the 8th in the Bregdan Chronicle series, very good.
I'm closing in on the end of PANE AND SUFFERING, Cheryl Hollan's first 'Glass Shop' cozy. Enjoying it a lot. And I'm listening to THE FORGOTTEN GARDEN by Kate Morton, which is wonderful – so atmospheric, especially in audio format.
Just finished DYING FOR A TASTE by Leslie Karst. Package coming from Amazon today – including books – so will pick one of those to read next.
Page, Curious about your opinion of The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend. I wanted to love it more than I did. Liked it, but didn't love it.
Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the book titles. Never know what we'll add to our TBR piles!
It does sound like you, Kaye. And, I've heard wonderful things about this Laura Lippman books. I'll have to put it on hold.
Mom, I'm so glad you discovered those Bregdan Chronicles!
I'm finishing "We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves" by Karen Joy Fowler, which is a bit heavy. I'm thinking the next book I read will be a light, cozy mystery for some balance.
-Becky
I'm reading Shutter Man by Richard Montanari. I also have A Few of the Girls, short stories by Maeve Binchy, and I'll read a story or two from time to time
Becky, I think that Karen Joy Fowler is on our Summer Reading List at the library since she's from Indiana. I agree with you, light after something heavy.
That's me, Margie, reading from my Broadway book, several shows at a time. Perfect fill-ins. I like Maeve Binchy, but have never read her short stories. I'll have to try some.
I'm reading The Gargoyle Gets His Girl by Kristen Painter. It's a light read.
I'm reading The Taste of Fear by Jeremy Bates. I've heard good things about his horror series The World's Scariest places, so when I saw this free on the nook, I got it.
Love the title, Sandy!
The Secret of the Hummingbird Cake is waiting for me to pick up at the library tomorrow. I just finished the first two of the Kate Parker Antiquarian bookshop series-The Vanishing Thief and the Counterfeit Lady. My grandson gave me the third in the series for my birthday book (our family tradition of a paperback rather than a card) so I am playing catch up. I enjoyed them. On my night table now is Dear Mr. Woodhouse by Faith Sullivan.
Sorry Lesa, I remembered wrong. The title of the book I am starting today is Good Night, Mr. Wodehouse by Faith Sullivan.
Just finished a Jan Burke short story collection, Case Closed, on my nook app – EXCELLENT, as are all her writings.
Trying to get thru Murder in Peach Season on my kindle app, it's a little too cozy for me …
Glad to reconnect with you, Lesa – we miss you in AZ!
Finishing up Of Giants and other Men by Caspar Peek. It is about Nicaragua during the depression and 50 years after. It is the story of two cousins who were friends and their experiences, one is a reclusive pathologist and the other is in the military. Also the horrors that the people went through under terrifying dictatorship.
In e-book I am reading SELENA by Greg Barth. Graphic in every way possible this crime fiction read is pretty tough. Good, but not right for lots of folks.
In print I just started DOUBLE SWITCH by T.T. Monday. A relief pitcher who also happens to be a PI. This is a sequel to THE SET UP MAN first reviewed on my blog by Kaye George for one of her "Monday With Kaye" segments. I was so intrigued by her review I hunted the book down and read it for review on the blog.
I have about four reviews to write as well on various books.
It's so good to see everyone's reading! Laurie, you know how much I miss Arizona, too. Well, Kevin, all I can say is your life and schedule certainly keeps you out of trouble.
