Well, our weather wasn’t quite that bad overnight from Saturday night through late Sunday afternoon, but we did get fourteen inches of snow or so, with temperatures supposed to drop to about -2 this week.
Saying that, I have no book review today. I spent time checking in with friends on the phone. My poor brother-in-law is the one who cleaned the driveway three times, and my sister took a swipe at it once. Their dog loved it!
So, what we really all want to know is how are you all faring in this weather. Stay safe. Stay warm. And, Jeff, aren’t you glad you’re not in New York right now?

So, so glad. Jackie got a picture from the window from our next door neighbor, and while our neighborhood is not as bad as some – we are right by The Narrows between Brooklyn and Staten Island, and the warmth of the water often keeps down the snow totals and mixes with rain – it was still looking like you’ have to dig out your car to get anywhere. (Yes, we have a bus that runs right by the house, but in past storms we noticed that sometimes they just skip a bus and you can be standing there for half an hour for nothing.) Plus, it is going to be colder there – not below zero cold, but single digit cold – all week and so no melting.
The crazy part is, there has been a little record WARMTH in South Florida, over 80 the last two days and today. The bottom drops out tonight and tomorrow will barely reach 60, and it will be cool all week, but compared with your poor people we have it made.
Be careful out there, stay in as much as possible – see, I told you retirement was great – and let the younger people do the shoveling.
You’re right, Jeff. I’m enjoying retirement, and not having to go anyplace. No appointments this week, so I can just enjoy the warmth of my sister’s home. The sad thing is the “younger” people are only a year and a half younger than me! I feel guilty, but I’d be useless shoveling snow. I’ve never lived anyplace where I needed to do that!
Even 60s sounds great right now. Enjoy the weather, and be glad you’re there this winter!
We have about a foot of snow with some ice on top here in NJ. We still have to go out and clean up this morning because the town didn’t plow our street until late last night. Fortunately Roger replaced the gas line on the snowblower last week. And since some of our neighbors were too lazy to move all of their cars into their driveways our street is only a single lane right now. We’re also supposed to have frigid temperatures this week so no melting in the near future.
Oh, Sandy. It sounds as if it’s a mess there with the ice. You and Roger stay in as much as you can, and stay warm! Good luck in this mess!
We ended up with 12″ but parts of Cincinnati got 22″! Very cold here. It is 3 degrees with negative wind chills at 9:00 a.m. Our HOA did a great job clearing the snow mid morning yesterday. Hoping they come back around today to get the rest of it and hopefully the pile at the end of my driveway so we can get our car out later this week. Also hoping the second S. C. Y. T
H. E book picks up.
Funny you should say that about the second S.C.Y.T.H.E. book, Sharon. I’m stuck about halfway in that book because I’m bored with it. I really enjoyed the first one. This one isn’t doing anything for me.
Whoa! 22 inches. I’m glad you didn’t get that much, but its still a mess. I hope they get the rest of the snow removed.
Good morning, everyone. I’m sorry many of you had to suffer through that much snow, and I hope everyone is safe and happy inside. In Northern California, we don’t typically have snow, although nearby Placerville seems to get some occasionally. I’ve lived through lots of snow in Pennsylvania, and I wouldn’t want to go through that again. For us, it’s been in the thirties overnight and very cold, but we certainly can’t complain about that compared to what you are experiencing. As a matter of fact, today is supposed to get to 60 degrees–don’t hate us!
Margie, I don’t hate you. I think you’re lucky to get temperatures in the 60s. We’re just living in the wrong place. I’m lucky though. We didn’t lose power, and I’m not responsible for snow removal.
We still have snow but not much, we broke the record for the coldest day today. Staying in, and yes no appointments for this whole week, so glad that I planned ahead for that! Next week, there are three so I hope that is warmer by then!
I’m glad you don’t have to go out in the cold, Carol. Stay home this week, and stay warm!
We are cold and icy here in Central Texas and we don’t like that at all. Not used to it and people definitely don’t know how to drive in it. And we had been having an ‘above average’ winter with temps that were ‘above average’. The weather people love to tell us that we are warmer than we are supposed to be or colder that we are supposed to be. Sometimes I wonder whether they are aware how averages are calculated – ha! Anyway, hoping for some melting today as temps will be above freezing for a very few hours and there is sun. I’m ready for spring!!!!
I agree with you, Kay. I’m ready for spring, too. I hope you get some melting. Stay home with your books!
I never get to comment this early but my office is thankfully closed today. I’m in Massachusetts, north of Boston and in the 16-20 inch range. It is still snowing and they expect another 3-4 inches of light snow by the end of the day. Temps in the single digits today and not much above 20 all week so no melting in sight. Thrilled to be home and not driving in this! Planning to shovel a bit, then read with a kitty on my lap today 😸. Stay safe everyone!
Eileen, There’s nothing better than reading with a kitty in your lap. I miss your cats. My nephew is in that area of Massachusetts as well. The snow has picked up here, too, but we’re not expected to get much more accumulation. I’m glad you’re home and not on the roads in this!
Well, here on the west coast of Canada in the Vancouver area it was -6C (about 21F) yesterday and that’s the coldest it’s been so far this year. We have no snow. None at all this year so far. I wouldn’t mind a little bit, just for the prettiness factor. But certainly nothing like what it seems most of you are dealing with; there’s not much fun in any of that! (I’m actually glad there’s no snow here right now because it wouldn’t be good to have to drive 45-60 minutes and the same back again for David’s daily radiation sessions, so I’ll just be grateful for the upcoming forecasted ten days of rain. It will be dreary but safer.) Stay safe and cozy everyone!
Even with ten days of rain, the roads can get slick. I hope you stay safe as well, Lindy. You can have any snow we could ship to you. It’s not so pretty right now.
Checking in from NE Dallas where we have around three inches of sleet here. The freezing rain was of a very short duration and far less than predicted. Very glad that did not happen. A very good thing though some fools apparently wanted an ice storm here.
Instead, we have a lot of sleet topped off with a sprinkling of snow. We are pushing records on the cold and won’t get above freezing till tomorrow afternoon. May hit 6 tonight.
Dallas is not built for this crap. Thankfully, we have kept power.
Kevin, I’m glad you still have power. The sleet sounds awful, though. No, I don’t think your area is built for that kind of weather. In fact, most of us aren’t built for it.
It’s just very foggy here, especially after dark. At night, you can barely see past the hood of your car.
Fog is no fun, either, Glen. I hope you drive safely as well.
It was 19 degrees this morning and still no snow here in Idaho. Like Margie, we’re supposed to see 60 degrees this weekend. This weather is nuts!
I agree, Bev. This weather is nuts. I’m not a fan of winter.
I’m an outlier here in that I love snow and am thrilled that we got over 12 inches of snow last night here in Providence. We don’t usually get that much since we are kinda close to the water. I went snowshoeing this afternoon (first time in a couple of years), which was really fun. I am very tired now though!
Trisha, My sister and her dog like it, too. I’ve hated it since I was a kid. I always said the only good thing was the hot chocolate I got when I came in.
My mom used to bake Rhodes bread and homemade cocoa on snow days. Once she ended up with my kids a couple extra days due to weather…she couldn’t wait to bring them home..me..I was in the tub of bubbles with a margarita and Cosmopolitan. Being with family can be fun.. finished EDGE..pretty good. Started Death Mask by Iris Johansson Okay..sometimes too much detail on boring stuff.
Carol Jeanne, You probably won’t come back, but I want to know what Rhodes bread is. I never heard of it.
No, I’m always interested!
