I don’t seem to have mysteries that share many things in common, so I just picked two books this week that feature male investigators. The Unspoken by Ian K. Smith introduces private investigator Ashe Cayne who was once on the police department in Chicago. He refused to participate in a cover-up, so was pushed out. As a PI, he’s hired to find a missing young woman, Tinsley Gerrigan. Her wealthy parents hire Cayne to find her. But, as he uncovers her secrets, he’s afraid he’s not going to find her alive. When he finds her boyfriend dead, a young Black man in Chicago, he has to navigate his old relationships in the police department to try to find answers while continuing to search for the missing young woman.

Bomber’s Moon is one of Archer Mayor’s Joe Gunther novels. The murder of a small-town drug dealer snowballs, becoming a complex case involving an investigative reporter and a private investigator, two young women who work together as they try to connect the murders of a small town drug dealer and a thief, with the tangled goings on at a prestigious prep school. While Gunther and his Vermont Bureau of Investigation team solve the murders, the two women go where the police cannot.
